From IRS Form 5695: Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit:
You may be able to take a credit of 30% of your costs of qualified solar electric property, solar water heating property, fuel cell property, small wind energy property, and geothermal heat pump property. This includes labor costs properly allocable to the onsite preparation, assembly, or original installation of the property and for piping or wiring to interconnect such property to the home.

5 Benefits of using solar power in the home

Solar power is the heat and light we receive from the sun. Our planet is bathed in this energy every day. However, it is only fairly recently that it has become economically viable to use this freely available renewable energy source at home.

There are many benefits to be had from using a solar power system in our home.

1. Renewable sustainable energy. Solar energy is renewable. The power derived from solar energy produces both heat and light. The heat energy can be simply used to directly heat water using solar panels. The hot water can then be used in heating systems or to provide the hot water we use in day to day life. The light energy can be converted into electricity by the use of photovoltaic cells. The use of sunlight to produce electricity has been known of for many years. We have all seen pictures of satellites and space stations with extendable arms covered with solar cells. In more recent years this technology has been used to build commercially viable power stations.

2. Reliability. Solar energy is a reliable source of power. It cannot be switched off or withheld. Solar power systems require little maintenance and therefore the running costs are low.

3. Environmentally Friendly. The power produced from solar energy has no harmful pollutants or side effects such as carbon dioxide.

4. Reduced need for fossil fuels. In the long term electricity produced from solar energy will help cut the use of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Fossil fuels used in power generation produce harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide which are polluting the atmosphere. Fossil fuels will run out. They cannot be replaced.

5. Tax incentives. More states and Governments are providing tax incentives to their citizens to encourage their use of renewable solar energy.
